‘Avengers’: Joss Whedon talks sequel, ‘Buffy’ and ‘X-Men’ parallels
Buffy: Dawn, listen to me. Listen. I love you. I will *always* love you. But this is the work that I have to do. Tell Giles… tell Giles I figured it out. And, and I’m okay. And give my love to my friends. You have to take care of them now. You have to take care of each other. You have to be strong. Dawn, the hardest thing in this world… is to live in it. Be brave. Live. For me.
In my opinion, The fact that Joss took his time to leave a message at Whedonesque alone, makes it crystal clear why do we follow him, why he’s the man.
HOLY MOTHER OF JOSS! I think this is how watching Star Wars in 1977 must have felt like! History in the making. I just witnessed to not only the best comic book movie ever, but one of the best movies I’ve ever watched. Flawless character devolpment, awesome Whedon-y dialog, full of the traditionally Whedon witty banter. All the characters, with no exception, are better here than in their own movies, and that’s a huge deal! Iron Man steals the show at every scene! Joss should always write Iron Man. Always. And I think Robert Downey Junior fusioned his personality to Tony Stark… I’ve never seen any actor so comfortable with his character than RDJ is with his Stark. Mark Ruffalo is the best Bruce Banner ever (sorry, Bill Bixby) and his Hulk is the protagonist of the film’s funniest scenes. Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow written by Joss is perfection; a flawless combination of beauty, feminism and badassery that only the creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer could provide. Captain America is also fantastic, way more likable than in his own movie; Tom Hiddleston does an amazing job as Loki, waaaay better than his portrayal of the same character in Thor. Nick Fury, Hawkeye, they’re all great here. Even Pepper (which I wasn’t a fan of) on Joss’ hands became likable! But no one beats Agent Coulson in the character development department, I cared more about him during this film than in all the other Marvel films put together. The idea of giving him a man-crush on Captain America was perfect, and so Joss.
It is THE comic book movie! It’s a (great, well written) comic book on a screen, in a way no other motion picture ever came close. The Avengers is no adaptation, it’s the real deal, a real comic book in the theater screen like I’ve never seen before. IMHO, only the Bruce Timm’s DC Animated movies are close to how loyal to the original source this is. Avengers is perfect, and I think it will change forever the way comic book movies are made. And the scene after the credits featuring one of my favorite villains filled my geeky heart with joy.
Well done, Joss, well done. Now people will start beleving what I’ve been telling them since 1998: Joss is the best creator in the business. No one else would have made it nearly this good, combining epic action sequences, great humor (it’s GENUINELY funny, not just “comic book film” funny) and making it accessible to diehard comic fans and casual fans alike. Joss Whedon was born to do this.
The fact that Enver Gjokaj and Alexis Denisof have cameos in the movie makes it even juicier for Whedonites. I’m proud of Joss Whedon, my favorite writer/director is finally getting the recognition he deserves. He is now Hollywood’s hottest property and I… (scratch that, if you’re following this blog this goes for you too so) WE were always aware of this, way before everyone else jumped the bandwagon.
Joss is GOD!
